Today we will continue the history of development of java.
After receiving the Stealth project Bill joy arranged a meeting with James Gosling, Mike Sheradin, Patric Naughton and other members in Aspen, Colorado to discuss this project. After this meeting this project was Given a name 'Green Project'. Over the period of time the Green project teethed ,the prospectus of project started becoming clearer to the engineers working on it. At that time their aim was to target the language for electronic devices. In starting only 13 members were working on this project .So a small office was established in Sand Hill Road in Menlo park,California. This team was also known as Green Team. The project they underwent was chartered by Sun Microsystems tom anticipate and plan for the"next-wave computing".
The was thinking to replace to C++ with a better version which would be system independent unlike C and C++,means it can work on any system. Bill Joy envisioned a language combining the power of Mesa and C .Mr. Gosling began to work on improving C++and renamed the structure of new language as "C++ ++ --". The ++ and -- means putting in and taking out stuff. There was an OAK tree outside the office. Mr. Gosling used to work on this language near that tree. So this language was registered as "Oak.". But very soon it was renamed as java.
The question is that why this language was called java. James Gosling and his team members were consuming a lot of coffee while developing this language. They felt that they were able to develop this language because of the good quality coffee they consumed. So the coffee has its own role in developing this language and this was exported from a place called "java island". Hence they fixed the name of the place for the language as java. And the symbol of the language is coffee cup and saucer.
on September 1994 Naughton and Jnathan Payne developed a java based web browser, which was renamed as HOT Java. On October 1994, Hot java was stable and was demonstrated to Sun executives. Hot java was the first browser , having capabilities of executing applets which was programs designed to run dynamically on Internet. On 23 January 1996 JDK1.0 version was officially released.
In next blog we will discuss different versions of java.
